The basketweave stitch is similar to the continental stitch - but covers the back more fully and uniformly.  Because the back is also stitched diagonally, this stitch results in less distortion/stretching of the canvas.  

Start in one corner, make one stitch left to right, then go left to right on the stitch just below the first stitch, then left to right to the left of the first stitch...  continue making stitches in a diagonal pattern.
